"Calculations show that the planet has a total of 1.9 hectares of biologically productive land per person to supply resources and absorb wastes—yet the average person on earth already uses 2.3 hectares. These “ecological footprints” range from the 9.7 hectares used by the average "middle Class" American, to the 0.47 hectares used by the average Mozambican"
Third world countries are creating a middle class at an alarming rate, think China......., these newly minted middle class and rich will require/demand more than their historic 2.3 hectars. Where do Americans think these hectars will come from?
FROM US OF COURSE, get used to it, our best days are behind us.
Data:
The World Bank estimates that the global middle class is likely to grow from 430 million in 2000 to 1.15 billion in 2030.
China's middle class will expand to more than half of its total population by 2020.India’s middle class over the next two decades will grow from about 5 percent of the population to more than 40 percent and create the world’s fifth-largest consumer market. http://samrainer.wordpress.com/2009/02/16/worldwide-middle-class-boom/
